Why Does Mia And More Use Pre-Cut Sugarcane for Fresh Sugarcane Juice?
When people think of Vietnamese sugarcane, they often picture long stalks being peeled and fed directly into a traditional traditional street-side sugarcane juicer.
However, to bring Fresh Sugarcane Juice to the world—especially to meet rigorous Food Safety Standards in the U.S.—our operational process required a more professional transformation. At Mia & More, we do not choose the convenient whole-stalk pressing method, but choose to use of using pre-cut and prepared sugarcane pieces. This decision stems from a deep understanding of the natural structure of the sugarcane plant as well as the desire to standardize Sugarcane Juice Quality throughout our entire system.

What are Sugarcane Nodes? Understanding this vital part of the plant.
When looking at a mature sugarcane stalk, you’ll easily notice the segments separated by rugged rings—these are the sugarcane nodes. In agriculture, these nodes act as “growth centers,” containing dormant buds and a complex vascular system designed for sprouting and rooting when the plant propagates.
Structurally, the nodes are quite different from the internodes (the stem sections between them). While the internodes are where the plant stores sucrose produced through photosynthesis, the node areas contain more growth tissue and fiber. The water content here is often higher relative to the sugar accumulation, meaning it isn’t as sweet as the mature stem.
This doesn’t mean nodes cannot be pressed for juice. In fact, the entire stalk can be used. However, if the goal is to create a cup of Fresh Sugarcane Juice with the most consistent flavor, the internode sections are generally preferred for their uniform sugar content and lower fiber ratio.
Additionally, the crevices around the sugarcane nodes are prone to trapping soil, sand, or natural impurities during harvest and transport. If the plant has been exposed to pests or disease, these areas are often more susceptible to harboring insects or microorganisms compared to the smooth internode surfaces. Therefore, if you press the whole stalk without careful selection, the quality of your Fresh Sugarcane Juice can easily be compromised by these natural impurities.

Why Does Mia & More Use Pre-Cut Sugarcane for Fresh Sugarcane Juice Instead of Pressing Whole Stalks?
To maintain a consistent flavor and preserve the authentic, rustic essence of our homeland treat at every location, Mia & More has standardized our ingredients into Ready to Juice Sugarcane. Pre-cutting and processing allow us to proactively remove any damaged sections, dry, woody bases, or parts with excessive sugarcane nodes. The result is a supply of premium-standard cane pieces, ensuring our Fresh Sugarcane Juice always retains a balanced, clean sweetness while minimizing any unwanted off-flavors.
Beyond flavor, switching to a pre-cut cane model offers significant benefits for Food Safety Standards. Sugarcane harvested from the farm goes through a long journey, often exposed to dust and dry leaves. By cutting the cane into smaller pieces and processing them beforehand, each piece can be visually inspected, greatly reducing the risk of bringing dirt and debris into the preparation process. Furthermore, using pre-cut cane allows our team to operate more efficiently and hygienically during rush hours, helping reduce the risk of cross-contamination and minimizing Sugarcane Juice Oxidation Prevention throughout our ETL Certified Sugarcane Juicer process.

We voluntarily sacrifice 10% of our sugarcane yield to ensure 100% pure essence in every glass we serve you.
To provide pristine, pre-pre-cut and prepared sugarcane pieces ready for the press, Mia & More chose the path less traveled: accepting operational costs many times higher than traditional pressing methods. Using pre-cut cane is not simply about chopping stalks; it is a “counter-current” effort:
Rigorous Source Selection: The sugarcane undergoes two strict rounds of inspection. The first occurs in the fields to remove defective stalks, and the second at our processing facility to remove any segments with pest damage or dense sugarcane nodes. We willingly forfeit a portion of our yield in exchange for absolute consistency in flavor.
Cleansing to Drinking Standards: Instead of rinsing with ordinary tap water, Mia & More invests in an RO (reverse osmosis) purified water system specifically for cleaning. We understand that if the surface of the cane piece isn’t impeccably clean, no machine – no matter how advanced—can produce truly pure juice.
A Technological Revolution: Standard presses on the market are designed for long, whole stalks. To process shorter pieces while maintaining high productivity and extraction yield, we invested in our own research to develop specialized, ETL Certified Sugarcane Juicer. These heavy-duty machines meet the most rigorous technical and sanitation standards in the U.S. market—something a traditional street-side sugarcane juicer could never achieve.
Every piece of cane represents an investment in labor, cold-chain storage, and closed-loop logistics. We know that integrity often comes at a cost, but that price is entirely worth it when we see the peace of mind in our customers’ eyes.
